Encyclopedia Esoterica is an attempt at creating a rhizomatic infromation store.
The description of a rhizomatic text is outlined by Deleuze and Guatarri in “A Thousand Plateaus”
- Non-Linear Structure: A rhizomatic book should not follow a linear narrative or argument. Instead, it should allow for multiple entry points and paths through the text, encouraging non-linear reading and interpretation.
- Multiplicity of Ideas: The book should not focus on a single central idea or theme. It should embrace a multitude of ideas, concepts, and perspectives, mirroring the interconnected and heterogeneous nature of a rhizome.
- Interconnected Chapters or Sections: Each part of the book should be capable of standing on its own, yet also connect with other parts in multiple ways. Readers should be able to enter the text at any point and follow their own path through its contents.
- Resistance to Hierarchical Organization: The book should resist traditional hierarchical organization (like chapters following a sequential order). Instead, it should present its contents in a way that emphasizes the equality and interconnectedness of all parts.
- Openness to Interpretation: The rhizomatic book should encourage diverse interpretations and understandings, resisting authoritative or definitive readings. It should be open-ended, allowing readers to draw their own connections and conclusions.
- Engagement with the World: Like a rhizome that connects with its surroundings in complex ways, the book should engage with the world around it, drawing in external references and contexts.
- Incorporation of Different Media and Styles: To further enhance its rhizomatic nature, the book could incorporate various media (texts, images, links to other works) and styles, reflecting the diverse and interconnected world it seeks to represent.
